Unfortunately, due to security concerns in the region around our original expedition site of Mt. Noshaq, just two weeks before our expedition Ascend made the difficult decision to postpone our climb of the highest peak in Afghanistan. Instead, we re-routed our expedition to another area of Afghanistan, the Panjshir valley.
As it often turns out, our flexibility turned out to be a fantastic opportunity. We found a GREAT alpine basin for our team and ended up climbing 3 peaks over 16,000 feet. Our expedition was a great success, not only with our climbing goals, but also in helping the girls learn leadership skills. An additional bonus too – the girls got to name these previously unclimbed, unnamed peaks and set all kinds of new precedents for Afghan women! – Danika Gilbert, Expedition Leader
